Prisoner Denied Pardon Cuts Off Own Penis

KENYA – Prison authorities say an inmate who was denied a pardon by President Uhuru Kenyatta chopped off his penis in protest. Francis Karuri is currently serving out a life sentence for “robbery with violence.” He had previously served 15 years on death row before his sentence was commuted.

Karuri was reportedly mopping block D in the state prison while listening to the Kenyan president’s annual pardons on the radio. After his name was not mentioned on the list, he castrated himself with a razor blade and then continued mopping the floor. He eventually collapsed from blood loss and was discovered by fellow inmates who noticed pools of blood leading to one of the other cells.

A prison official who spoke to Karuri said he removed his member “because it was useless to him since he cannot have children now.”

Inmates say he had been struggling with depression for several months and had been transferred to a section of the prison dedicated to those who suffer from mental health issues.

President Kenyatta pardoned 50 prisoners on Jamhuri Day to coincide with 50 years of Kenya’s independence.

A cause for much celebration.
