Politics is a dirty business, and those entering the public arena know far too well that their lives, and the lives of their friends and family, will be closely scrutinized.
On of the candidates for Rhode Island governor has just come out with the news that he was responsible for a deadly crash 25 years ago that killed a 41-year-old man.
Allan Fung (R), who is the mayor of Cranston, Rhode Island, said that he came out with the news, because he was in fear that his opponents in the race would surely use it against him.
Fung said that when he was 18-years-old, he lost consciousness and struck an man fixing a flat tire along the side of the road. Fung was not charged with a crime, but did settle with the deceased family for $112,000.
When I was in college, I was in a car accident that resulted in a fatality,” he wrote. “The accident was thoroughly investigated, and all charges were dismissed. Neither drugs nor alcohol was involved. This is something that I have lived with, and will continue to live with, for the rest of my life.”
He also said he was deeply sorry “for the pain and grief of the family and friends of the man who lost his life.”–Allan Fung
