Some Twitter users in Turkey appear to be being re-directed “to a statement by Turkey’s telecommunications regulator” when trying to access the Twitter website. The statement cites “protection measures” applied to the site by court order.
Damaging allegations of corruption involving PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan surfaced last week on Twitter. Erdogan responded by vowing to “wipe out Twitter.”
James Reynolds, a BBC reporter in Istanbul reported his own inability to access the website.
“I don’t care what the international community says at all. Everyone will see the power of the Turkish Republic,” Mr Erdogan said earlier on Thursday.
There are approximately ten million Twitter users in Turkey. Twitter has not yet issued any kind of official statement. Turkey previously blocked popular video site YouTube from 2008 to 2010.
