Kansas Democrat Switches to GOP over Social Issues

The longest-serving member of the Kansas House, Rep. Jan Pauls has left the Democratic party for the Republican party given her views on “social issues,” such as gay rights and abortion.

The self-described “Blue Dog Democrat” says it was an easy decision.

Pauls, of Hutchinson, said she will continue her advocacy for labor issues and working families, but her views on abortion and gay rights were no longer compatible with the Kansas Democratic Party.

“I’ve made the relatively easy decision to go from being a Blue Dog Democrat to being a blue-collar Republican,” Pauls said.
