Today Is Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Birthday

Feb 4, 2013 5:43 AM PT

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran pastor and German patriot hanged by the Nazis for his involvement in a plot to assassinate Hitler, would be 107 years old today. Bonhoeffer's extraordinary story of open defiance to Hitler out of loyalty to Christ, is told brilliantly by Eric Metaxas in "Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy." This moving biography is not only the story of a man who went joyfully to his death, honored that God chose him to suffer as the Jews suffered, but also a chilling look at the slow creep of anti-Christian fascism at the hands of the state.

Today, Metaxas wonders what Bonhoeffer would think of our own government's attacks on religious freedom, which is well worth a read:

Obama Wields Big Gun, Not Really

Feb 3, 2013 12:43 PM PT

In response to My First Gun Show: The Bitter Clinger Interview Edition :

Hard to believe that this is Jerome's very first gun show. But then again, he doesn't strike me as the 'rough and tough' side-arm-toting gun enthusiast that usually frequents these gun shows. Well the girl in the video is correct, this is all about fear. But gun manufacturers and dealers are loving the short-term sales bonanza they are experiencing due to the proposed gun control measures Obama and his peeps want to implement. Obama is bad for the overall economy, but at gunshows, the Skeet Shooter-in-Chief brings in the big bucks for gun dealers

Now We Know Why Obama's So Bullish on Birth Control

Feb 3, 2013 11:33 AM PT

This story didn't get a lot of play yesterday, but it can't be repeated enough. Job growth per month over the past four years averaged a whopping 25,000—100k shy of conservative estimates of how many jobs we need to create per month just to keep up with population growth.

And we can see Obama's logic clearly: can't keep up with population growth? Stunt population growth! Free NuvaRings for all!

Gabby Giffords, Physical Disability, Liberal Logic and Gun Ownership

Feb 3, 2013 8:13 AM PT

Why are second amendment supporters afraid to discuss Gabby Giffords when talking gun control? It is a tragedy what happened to Mrs. Giffords. As a result of being shot by a deranged Jared Lee Loughner she suffered a physical disability

Can someone who is physically disabled handle the weapon in a safe manner and especially when under a stress as in self defense?

One hundred years of redistribution, control, and deception

Feb 2, 2013 10:33 PM PT

Today is the 100th birthday of the income tax.  It's not a happy birthday.  Whether or not we needed a government many times the size of the one that existed when the first 358,000 people filed form 1040 is a separate question, and one I would answer in the negative.  But the way we funded that government was an offense against our property rights, our sense of national unity, and our ability to perceive the true size and cost of the State.

Instead of paying for government as a necessary expense, we have allowed it to invade our bloodstream, and our nervous system.  We allow it to control us, blind us, and divide us.  We made it the master we all work for, instead of the burden we all carry.  And we gave it a method of nourishing itself that all but guaranteed it would grow out of all control... reaching, in our lifetimes, a new stage in which it no longer considers its available revenue to be more than a minor inconvenience to its ambitions.  We came to accept that "greed" is a sin only private citizens can be guilty of, because the State has first claim on every cent they earn.

For All the Skeet Truthers...

Feb 2, 2013 4:40 PM PT

Earlier today, as I hadn't seen the tweets from Obama's camp saying he was shooting on August 4th of last year, I checked the pic's Exif data on Flickr—a great feature they include for photo wonks to see the aperture, shutter speed, etc. when they're checking out others' uploads. "Date taken: August 4, 2012." Okay, cool.

Later on, when people started throwing up a screen grab of some Reuters story saying that Obama went golfing that same day, I got rather pissed off. It's extremely easy to do a round of golf and a round of shooting in the same day with plenty of sunlight to spare.
