Another zombie groan released in advance from the State of the Union speech:

"Tonight, I’ll lay out additional proposals that are fully paid for and fully consistent with the budget framework both parties agreed to just 18 months ago. Let me repeat – nothing I’m proposing tonight should increase our deficit by a single dime.  It’s not a bigger government we need, but a smarter government that sets priorities and invests in broad-based growth."

A tired speech for a tired nation

We'll all have plenty to say about the State of the Union as delivered, but the excerpts released in advance by the White House are so old and tired that the email is covered in cobwebs.  

Here's the mummified example that really stood out: "It is our unfinished task to restore the basic bargain that built this country – the idea that if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead, no matter where you come from, what you look like, or who you love."

The impressive efforts of the continuing Obama campaign

I will be writing about the State of the Union address tonight from a party organized by Obama supporters through the Obama campaign, which is still active and pumping out fundraising and issue-based emails.

As much as I detest the idea of the "permanent campaign," especially one waged in coordination with the president (first-world tech, third-world politics), I have to admire the way they get basic things right.

Obama 2008 just nuked Obama 2013

During Obama's presidency, I've often had occasion to refer to George Orwell's dictum that the greatest opposition to a left-wing government is its previous propaganda.

So, too, with North Korea's latest nuclear provocation. In 2008, Obama vowed to "eliminate" the Kim regime's nukes. He also congratulated himself on his progress in the State of the Union addresses of 2010 and 2011.
