Dresden Bombing

Feb 19, 2013 9:59 AM PT

Hippies ruin everything, Exhibit 8,346,788:

My wife and I are currently in Los Angeles on our annual sabbatical from Chicago's subarctic wintertime cruelties. After a pleasant President's Day afternoon at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, we returned to LA where we decided to have our evening victuals at The Dresden in Hollywood.

Feb 19, 2013 9:27 AM PT

Felix Ortiz, D-Brooklyn has proposed a law that would require gun owners to carry a $1M liability policy.

Bill S2353 will require all gun owners in NY to obtain and “continuously maintain” insurance coverage of at least $1 million, or they will suffer “immediate revocation of such owner’s registration, license and any other privilege to own” a firearm.

Sequester Will Force Obama's Hand on Entitlements Says...The White House

Feb 19, 2013 9:27 AM PT

President Obama has been giving the sequester plenty of negative attention recently. Two weeks ago he made a statement about the sequester in which he called it a "self-inflicted wound" to the economy. Ten days ago he focused on it during his Weekly Address saying the cuts would make Americans "suffer." Then last week, in his State of the Union speech, the President called it "a really bad idea."

If you didn't know better you'd think all of this was a shock to the President. In fact, when the Debt Limit Deal was reached in 2011 the White House made clear that sequester was bad news by design. The White House Fact Sheet announcing the debt limit deal called sequester as "A Strong Enforcement Mechanism to Make All Sides Come Together."

If the fiscal committee took no action, the deal would automatically add nearly $500 billion in defense cuts on top of cuts already made, and, at the same time, it would cut critical programs like infrastructure or education.  That outcome would be unacceptable to many Republicans and Democrats alikecreating pressure for a bipartisan agreement without requiring the threat of a default with unthinkable consequences for our economy.

Gee, Why Aren't Jobs Being Created?: Obama Threatens Tax Increases ... Again

Feb 19, 2013 9:25 AM PT

For who knows how long now, Obama's been coming out about once a week to publicly demand Congress raise taxes on the "wealthy." Then, usually within an hour of this happening, the media will scratch its collective head and wonder aloud about the lack of job creation.

There is nothing under-cutting our economy more than fear and instability. On top of all the new regulations already passed and ObamaCare, the president keeps freaking job creators out with this incessant talk about taking even more money out of the private economy in order to feed the Federal Beast.

Why LOLcats Matter in Politics

Feb 19, 2013 9:06 AM PT

Professor Bill Jacobson at Legal Insurrection had a must read post this weekend that I felt compelled to draw to everyone's attention.  It brilliantly lays out a great example of how memes and internet culture pervade politics, especially when done intentionally and strategically.  This is a point in a larger picture that I myself have been trying to stress to activists in the movement - it's all about the culture.

There is nothing like Upworthy or BuzzFeed on the right.  The closest we have come is Twitchy, Michelle Malkin’s brilliant website.

Are you surprised that Obama won the youth vote even though his policies are a complete disaster for the young?

We are losing the fight to the lowest of low information voters, who are pushed toward a liberal agenda by very smart and talented people who understand the power of social media in a way we don’t.

So often when I ask readers to follow us on Facebook and Twitter, I’m met with comments about privacy concerns on Facebook and “I don’t do Twitter” type responses.  Fair enough, but at least understand the swarm effect a website like Upworthy can create based on dumbed-down politically-savvy social media interactions, and how that swarm may result in Elizabeth Warren being on the Democratic 2016 ticket if Hillary doesn’t run.

When I read about plans for Republicans planning to narrow the digital divide, I can’t help thinking we are fighting the last war.

Todd Akin (R-MO) again?

Feb 19, 2013 8:40 AM PT

Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) voted most conservative member of the House in 2012 according to National Journal.

No Republican politician should ever, ever, ever ... did I say ever, use the words "legitimate" and "rape" in the same sentence, paragraph, hell ... in the same written piece or speech. Are you reading this Mr. Akin?

Obama to taxpayers: One false move and the firefighters get it

Feb 19, 2013 8:04 AM PT

In response to Obama hides behind the boys in blue and red; media swoon:

The same farce plays out every time Obama tries to hide from spending cuts.  The first penny slashed from this titanic government comes right out of a firefighter's pocket!  Ask me too many tough questions about food stamp abuse, and I'll fire some cops!  Make a move on those federal studies to measure the effect of crack cocaine abuse on robot squirrels, and I'll send some teachers to the bread lines!

The media doth protest too much

Feb 19, 2013 7:56 AM PT

The media really is freaking out over Golf-gate... at least, to the extent they're willing to get truly upset with Barack Obama about anything.  Yesterday brought a really remarkable Politico article about "Obama the Puppet Master."  I picked it apart in depth here; suffice to say, it's a marvel of passive-aggressive resentment mixed with admiration.

Taken with other media anguish about Obama ordering them off the golf course, it might also be a very low-caliber shot across the bow at the White House - "even you can only abuse us so much, Mr. Obama."  Above all, it's a limited mea culpa designed to shift the blame for media bias, peppered with repeated insistence that conservatives have it all wrong.  The media's not serving as willing cheerleaders for a President they ardently support.  No, they've been seduced by Obama's awesome media manipulation skills and advanced technology!  They're really the victims here.  They're basically American heroes for bravely stepping forward and softly muttering about the way they've been treated for the last four years... months after Obama's second term was secure.

Obama hides behind the boys in blue and red; media swoon

Feb 19, 2013 7:33 AM PT

We interrupt this bout of media navel-gazing--why does Obama abuse us when we love him so?--to offer some constructive advice to the White House press corps: start showing some common-sense skepticism.

Today, for example, President Obama is surrounding himself with firefighters and police to claim that the evil sequester--which he invented--is going to force them out of their jobs. The media are aflutter about it.
