Journolist Ring Wraiths

Mar 6, 2013 12:11 PM PT

In response to The Fastball Special:

I don't read comic books, but being a huge LOTR fan, I am partial to Victor Davis Hanson's analogy of today's Journolistas as J. R. R. Tolkien's Ring Wraiths, "petty lords who wanted a few shiny golden Obama rings — only to end up as shrunken slaves to the One."

In the same way that the operatives of the Nixon White House once channeled the character of Richard Nixon, so too the Obama administration reflects the manner in which Barack Obama has always campaigned and viewed politics. His 2004 Senate run and two presidential campaigns all shared the same modus operandi of unleashing surrogates to tar opponents, bully critics, romance the mainstream media, and caricature the shrinking number of journalistic kulaks — all while deploring the politics of personal destruction.

Utah's Republican Senator Mike Lee Joins Rand Paul Filibuster

Mar 6, 2013 12:05 PM PT

After three-hours and ten minutes of Kentucky senator Rand Paul employing a good old-fashioned talking filibuster, Utah senator Mike Lee has stepped in to relieve his Republican colleague.

Currently, both men are holding a discussion on the Obama Administration's drone strike policy. The focus is mainly on how the White House is defining "imminent" as "not at all imminent."

Review of Miracles and Wonders Heretofore Undreamt: It's Not All I'd Hoped For

PopSci reviews a personal flying robot, an entry in the growing personal flying robot consumer market, and finds it's rather a more complicated and less user-friendly personal flying robot than one might wish.

It’s a sign of the times when new consumer-grade, commercially available remote-controlled drones just show up unsolicited at our offices with an invitation from the manufacturer to take them for a spin.

It’s Not Really “Ready To Fly”: Consumer products should be relatively easy to use right out of the box, and indeed DJI describes Phantom as an “all in one solution ready to fly.” But unboxing the drone is not so simple. Attaching the legs with a phillips screwdriver, attaching the propellors with the provided fasteners--this is all stuff that’s expected when you purchase something with “some assembly required.” But actually transitioning from an open box to a vehicle that’s “ready to fly” requires a bit more work. The “Quickstart Manual” is a densely-worded 16 pages long. The battery charging procedure requires its own set of instructions.

Politico's James Hohmann: Paul Launched Filibuster to 'Improve His Own Political Prospects'

Mar 6, 2013 11:37 AM PT

True to form, Politico and MSNBC once again became one just a few minutes ago.

Here's Politico's national political reporter, James Hohmann, explaining Sen. Rand Paul's filibuster motivations on MSNBC:

Rand Paul's concern is his own base of support. He has his eyes on a 2016 campaign. This isn't really the Republicans, he knows Brennan is going to get confirmed. He's trying to shore up the people who supported his father, Ron Paul, even as he tries to make inroads with national security conservatives and others in the Republican coalition to improve his own political prospects.
