Incumbent Senator John Cornyn confirmed public opinion polling heading into the March 2014 Joint Primary with a clear victory and a double digit lead–according to unofficial Texas Secretary of State returns.
Senator Cornyn is slated to face either dentist David Alameel or Kesha Rogers (pending a probable runoff) in the November 2014 General Election.
“I want to thank Texas Republicans for nominating me again to represent our party this November,” Cornyn said in a statement Tuesday night. “As I’ve traveled our great state, I’ve been honored by support from the full range of our conservative coalition – social conservatives, fiscal conservatives, tea party supporters, libertarians, national security hawks, and everyone in between. As I have always suspected, and tonight proves, Texans value hard work and solutions over rhetoric.”
The senior senator filled Texas media with radio, television and digital ad campaigns thanks in large part to spending roughly $2.6 million since January 2014–according to the Federal Election Commission.
In the closing days before the 2014 Texas Joint Primary, Cornyn foes fired allegations of campaign finance irregularities and questions over mysterious direct mail campaigns without proper disclosures amongst themselves. Houston area Congressman Steve Stockman’s credibility with grassroots conservatives was further damaged after the Tea Party Patriots denied endorsing the unorthodox campaign–contrary to Stockman’s assertions–on the eve of the election.
