Texas Lt. Governor and Attorney General Races Headed to Runoff

The race for two of Texas’ top three statewide executive branch offices heads now to a runoff election on May 27th.

In the Lt. Governor’s race, Sen. Patrick took a surprising lead early in the night and has held a double digit advantage over incumbent Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples now end a campaign that started over a year ago.

In the Texas Attorney General race, State Senator Ken Paxton is holding on to a double digit lead in a surprising upset over Rep. Dan Branch–who was predicted to take the lead into the runoff by both of his opponents. Railroad Commission Chairman Barry Smitherman finished the race in third.

Voter turnout will be critical to both of these races in what is predicted to be an even smaller turnout with the May 27th runoff election falling–on the Tuesday after the Memorial Day holiday.
