EDMONTON - The world's record for the longest continuous hockey game now belongs to a group of amateur Edmonton athletes.

The 40 players broke the old record at noon Monday - 240 hours, or 10 straight days of non-stop skate-lacing and puck-chasing, through temperatures that ranged from minus-40 to plus-three.

The effort raised more than $300,000 for cancer research.

It was the third time the event was held at the NHL-sized rink on an acreage just east of Edmonton.

This time, the group broke its own record, set in 2005.

One of the players said he planned to go right home and sleep - and then go back to the rink to coach a minor hockey game tonight.
