THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - A crab fisherman from Newfoundland and Labrador has landed a whopping catch that didn't come from the sea: a $12.5-million lottery prize. Earle Smith had oneof the four winning tickets for Saturday night's Lotto 6-49 draw for a $50.3-million jackpot - the second-largest in Canadian history.
Smith and his wife were visiting daughter Lisa and son-in-law Deon Goodbie in Ontario's Durham Region, east of Toronto, over the weekend.
The 53-year-old Smith and 32-year-old Goodbie agreed to split $21 worth of lottery tickets for the draw.
Goodbie says he'll continue working at his job with Ontario Power Generation, while Smith will retire.
Two of the other winning tickets were also bought in Ontario, with the fourth purchased in Quebec.
Canada's biggest lottery jackpot was a $54-million prize in 2005 shared by 17 oil and gas workers in Camrose, Alta.
