FRANKFURT, Germany - Software AG saw an increase in net profits and sales in 2008 as a result of its debut in new markets, the company said Tuesday.

The Darmstadt-based company - the world's largest independent provider of mission critical software and Germany's second largest software company after SAP AG - said net profit in 2008 increased 31 per cent to euro116 million (US$153.12 million), from euro88.4 million a year ago.

Product revenues increased by 19 per cent to euro539 million, from euro454.2 million in 2007.

"Software AG's successful entry into the Brazilian market, the smooth integration of webMethods and continued organic growth in the new webMethods division contributed to the good performance in fiscal the company said in a statement.
