SHIBAM, Yemen - A senior Yemeni police official says 49 people have been killed by floods sweeping through the south of the country caused by a massive tropical storm. Hamid el-Kharashi, a police chief in the southern province of Hadramut, says the death toll is expected to rise as scores of people are still missing and hundreds of families are homeless or trapped by the rising waters.
A tropical storm on Thursday smashed into Yemen's remote Hadramut province causing floods in this impoverished country.
Damage has been extensive because most homes in the area are made of mud brick.
An Associated Press reporter in Shibam, northern Hadramut watched a two-story mud brick house disintegrate in front of him Saturday.
