WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush leaves Washington tonight on a six-day trip to Africa. It's his second tour of the continent since becoming president and he intends to use it to underscore how the U.S. is helping Africa achieve progress against war, disease and poverty.

Bush's first stop tomorrow is Benin, where the U.S. has been helping with a massive program aimed at wiping out malaria. He'll also be making stops in Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana and Liberia, highlighting democracy and trade.

In a scene-setting speech yesterday, Bush declared that the age of paternalism toward Africa is over. He said Africans should know that America is committed for the long haul but that Americans also need to see their compassion and dollars are paying off.
