The daughter of a former senior official of the Oita prefectural education board, who was arrested over a teachers' recruitment scandal in the prefecture, has resigned from her teaching post, board officials said Wednesday.
The 23-year-old daughter of Tetsuro Yano, 52, was serving as an elementary school teacher in Saiki, Oita. Yano allegedly gave gift vouchers worth 1 million yen each to two other arrested education officials in return for favorable treatment in his daughter's recruitment.
It is the first time that a teacher employed through illegitimate manipulation of recruitment exam results in Oita has quit.
In her resignation letter dated July 17, she said, "While I was not aware of the illegitimate manipulation, I must in part take responsibility for it," according to the education board. "I hope the current turmoil will subside and public trust in teachers be maintained."
She started teaching in April last year, but was frequently absent from classes after the scandal came to light, according to educational officials.
The prefectural education board has already decided to dismiss teachers confirmed to have passed the recruitment tests through such illicit manipulation.
Five public education officials, including Yano, have been arrested so far in the prefecture for bribery in connection with the recruitment of teachers.
