Clinton clasped hands with South Africa's first black president Friday in Johannesburg. When the shutters stopped clicking, she joked she didn't want to release his hands, and the 91-year-old Mandela responded with a smile and a thumbs up.
The two met privately for 30 minutes. Clinton, accompanied by Mandela's wife Graca Machel, also toured a collection of documents and photos from his life.
Clinton said the careful notes Mandela had made revealed the "discipline that he brought to a life filled with so many great achievements."
South Africa was the second stop on Clinton's seven-nation African tour.
