Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will visit Tokyo for two days starting next Tuesday to look into ways to spur global growth with Japanese government officials, the Treasury Department said Wednesday.
Geithner's visit -- his first since taking the Treasury chief post -- precedes his participation in a finance ministerial meeting of the 21- member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Singapore on Nov. 12.
"While in Tokyo, the secretary will meet with senior government officials to discuss policies to bring about strong, sustainable and balanced global growth," the Treasury said.
The Treasury did not say who Geithner will meet in Tokyo, but he is expected to hold bilateral talks with Japanese Finance Minister Hirohisa Fujii.
Geithner and Fujii met bilaterally in Pittsburgh in September on the fringes of a financial summit of the Group of 20 major advanced and emerging nations.
The APEC finance ministerial talks precede an annual APEC summit to be held in the city-state Nov. 14-15. Fujii is expected to skip the Singapore meeting.
APEC's 21 member economies are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.
