The U.S. Geological Survey, which monitors global seismic activity, said the temblor occurred at 3:41 a.m. local time in the area of Sumbawa Island, which is located in the middle of the Lesser Sunda Islands.
The quake's epicenter was located 15 kilometers north-northwest of Raba, a town in the eastern part of Sumbawa, 310 km east-northeast of Lombok, an island east of Bali, and 1,335 km east of Jakarta, according to the USGS. It had a depth of 25 km.
The Jakarta Post quoted police and local officials as saying from the town of Bima, near Raba, that at least 36 people were severely injured in the quake but nobody was killed, contrary to earlier reports that two people were killed.
The quake reportedly destroyed 86 houses and caused mild damage to hundreds of buildings in Sorimandi, Ambalawi and Bolo, the three hardest-hit districts.
