The institute calculated the energy consumption based on an average household in the Kanto region, and found that its annual carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by 72 percent in 2016 from the 2009 level if it introduces energy-saving electric appliances, such as refrigerators and air conditioners, as well as a hybrid car between 2010 and 2015 in steps.
While the household needs to spend 1.8 million yen for that purpose, the investment would be paid off in 2019 and the effort would generate 1.8 million yen of benefit by 2030 and 2.2 million yen by 2040, according to the estimate.
The institute encourages households to invest in such energy-saving measures as it will be beneficial, while urging the government to compile policies to alleviate their cost burdens.
