SEOUL, Feb. 9 (AP) - (Kyodo)—South Korea's parliament on Tuesday approved the government's plan to dispatch about 250 troops to Haiti as part of a U.N. peacekeeping operation in the Caribbean country, according to the Defense Ministry.

The troops, including about 120 engineers, will help stabilization and rebuilding efforts in Haiti, devastated by recent earthquakes.

An official of the ministry said it is considering the dispatch within this week at the earliest.

South Korea has already provided emergency supplies and personnel, all to be covered under a $10 million relief package to be sent in stages.

Seoul hopes to increase the number its troops participating in peacekeeping operations around the world to some 1,000. It currently has some 400 such forces deployed overseas that purpose.
