Saskatoon drive-in not closing; 1 of only 3 in province still showing movies

THE CANADIAN PRESS SASKATOON - The sun is not setting yet on the Sundown drive-in movie theatre in Saskatoon.

It's shown movies for more than 40 years, but it's future was uncertain in 2007, when its owner had reportedly sold the land to buyers from Vancouver. But 84-year-old Duffy Besenski said the deal fell through, and he's happy it did because business is brisk.

"It hasn't been this good in 20 years." said Besenski. "So, I might as well keep it going. We're getting a lot of kids coming out there now with SUVs and pickups that were coming in the truck 20 years ago."

Besenksi said he'll keep the Sundown open as long as his body holds up and he hopes his grandson will take over one day.

The Sundown, which opened in 1965, is one of just three surviving drive-in's in the province - the others are near Kyle and Watrous.

The theatre has some interesting history behind it.

In 1996, a tornado ripped through, wrecking one screen and tearing the roof off the concession.

Besenski said it did $150,000 damage.

The movie they were showing that night? Twister.
