NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark., April 3 (UPI) --
Three bridge workers are likely dead after falling into a river in Arkansas Wednesday when their platform broke free, authorities said.
Rescuers from North Little Rock, Little Rock, Pulaski County and the Arkansas State Police searched for the workers in the Arkansas River near the Interstate 430 bridge before their efforts were deemed a recovery at about 1pm, the Arkansas News Bureau reported Wednesday.
The victims worked for Oscar Renda Contracting Inc. of Roanoke, Texas, and had been on a job for Central Arkansas Water, said Robert Mauldin, North Little Rock Fire Department assistant fire chief.
The current and height of the river reportedly were too intense for crews to dive into the water. Mauldin said an object that was found "right under the bridge" could be the workers' platform.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was attempting to have the object lifted out of the deep waters, the report said.
