House Clears Bill to Avert Shutdown

The House passed legislation on Friday to prevent a government shutdown. The continuing resolution will give lawmakers an extension until the middle of next week to pass the appropriations spending bill.

Bernie Sanders Tops With Time Magazine Readers

Presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) is the winner of the reader’s poll for Time Magazine’s Person of the Year. The Democratic Socialist received 10.2 percent of the vote. In second place was Malala Yousafza, recipient of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, with 5.2 percent. Pope Francis came in third with 3.7 percent of votes.

The administration’s housing regulation, Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH), gives the federal government the power to decide the racial composition of communities in America. The regulation allows for the Department of Housing and Urban Development to withhold money from cities and municipalities that fail to address racial disparities in their communities. Congress is likely to defund Obama’s housing rules in the forthcoming omnibus spending bill.
