According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT), the government-run healthcare plans in the House and Senate will reduce budget deficits. To use a technical phrase, this is utter nonsense. A giant new entitlement program will be a budget buster. Politicians routinely exaggerate and use rosy-scenario estimates, but the healthcare numbers are different. If projected deficits are lower, the “official” numbers from CBO and JCT grease the wheels for legislation, so dishonest estimates have big consequences. Moreover, the Democrats are very nervous about the charge of fiscal irresponsibility (especially since the so-called stimulus was such a failure), so these phony numbers are politically valuable – especially for the Blue Dog democrats who are looking for excuses to support Obama, Reid, and Pelosi.
