Democrats: Free Gas for Obama Voters?

Democrats: Free Gas for Obama Voters?

As Obama’s gas prices have climbed over the past three years, raising the cost of filling the tank on my Jeep from $30 to over $70, I’ve often told my brother: “I’m worried that at the last minute, Obama and the Democrats will offer free gas cards to potential Democrat voters lower income families, in order to shore up their voting bloc for 2012.” And although it seems like a shameless thing to do–to deny citizens the oil necessary to make gasoline at a cheap price in order to divide them by promising free gasoline to the ones who will vote for your party–to date, the relentless use of class-warfare on the part of Obama and other Democrats makes this a realistic option in my mind.

Enter Michigan Rep. George Darany (D-Dearborn). He has introduced Michigan House Bill 5476: a bill which would provide a gasoline subsidy for people with incomes of less than $50,000. Payable via a state income tax credit, the subsidy would work like this:

A $100 per vehicle subsidy for people making less than $50,000; a $75 per vehicle subsidy could be claimed by those with incomes between $50,000 and $75,000; and a $50 per vehicle subsidy for incomes between $75,000 and $100,000.

Like almost every Democrat plan, this one is all smoke and mirrors. As the example of filling up my Jeep demonstrates, even the $100 subsidy would only fill my tank 1.3 times with the current Obama gas prices. And the cost to the state of Michigan would be $304 million a year. Of course, that’s not the real point. The real point is that Democrats have once again demonstrated their absolute love affair with the practice of spending other peoples’ money and of using other peoples’ money to keep themselves in office.

Fortunately, it doesn’t look like Darany’s bill has a prayer of passing. However, the fact that a Democrat has actually put his name on a piece of legislation which would force people to pay for the gasoline of possible Obama voters is absolutely outrageous.
