Trayvon Martin Police Chief Resigns

Sanford, FL police chief Bill Lee, Jr., who had taken a leave of absence during the follow-up Trayvon Martin investigation, resigned today. “Elected officials used this man as a scapegoat to heal our community,” said City Commissioner Patty Mahany. “Our community was never broken.”

She said that the resignation was a “terrible tragedy,” and pointed at those like Al Sharpton who had “ruined the reputation and career of a really stellar law enforcement officer.” The police department, she maintained, “did nothing wrong.”
