State Rep. Stephen Ortego (D) of Louisiana is in hot water after stating on the floor of the legislature that the state didn’t need more veterans:
A lot of times, veterans come with a lot of issues, too and I know the federal government (tries to) deal with a lot of those issues, but do you think we’re going to be able to deal with them too? … Homeless rates and mental illness rates, especially when they’re coming after the war.
Ortego didn’t apologize for the comments when asked about them. Instead, he said that he “could’ve been a lot clearer.” He was pretty clear. The debate was over a state bill that would allow in-state tuition to veterans.
