Governor Deval Patrick (D-MA) is going all-out in his defense for Senate candidate and Harvard Law School professor Elizabeth Warren, after Warren has come under fire for bragging repeatedly about her supposed Native American ancestry. Now, Patrick is attempting to conflate questions about Warren’s ancestry with “birtherism,” the phenomenon of Americans believing that President Obama was not born in the United States. As the Boston Herald reports:
“Are you going to ask for a long-form birth certificate too?” Patrick quipped when asked his thoughts about the controversy over Warren’s claims of Native American heritage, repeatedly insisting that he doesn’t care about the issue.
“I don’t care about it,” he said. “I think she’s answered every question.”
“We’re focused on a distraction. Frankly, if I were Scott Brown, I would want this distraction – a distraction from his record,” Patrick said.
The distraction springs from Warren, of course, since it was she who first made an issue of her Native American extraction. But there is no similarity whatsoever between the birther phenomenon and the questions about Warren; no proof has been offered to the effect that President Obama was born in Kenya, while substantial proof has been offered that Warren has no Native American ancestry.
