With public sector reforms succeeding in Wisconsin as well as San Diego, San Jose, and Providence, Rhode Island it looks like the ultra-liberal Los Angeles may want in on the action as well.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the union-friendly Los Angeles Board of Education, “approved a labor deal that could preserve thousands of jobs but would shorten the school year by up to a week and reduce teacher salaries as much as 5 percent.”
While Local 99 of the SEIU is on board with the proposal, the United Teachers Los Angeles must approve the pact and will begin to vote on Wednesday, according to the Times.
Approximately 70% of those who cast ballots from Local 99 favored the proposal although only five percent cast ballots; those results may be a signal that Los Angeles’ public sector unions are receptive to reforms.
If these proposals pass, it could add more momentum nationwide for reforming the public sector, which contrary to what President Barack Obama may think, is still doing better than the private sector.
