The presidential race between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney just got more personal. The Obama campaign, unable to run on Obama’s record, is now running a new ad that accuses Romney of proposing a tax plan that would enrich Romney at the expense of the middle class.
This ad’s purpose is to distract attention from Obama’s economic record and again put the spotlight on Romney’s tax returns.
Here’s how the AFP described the ad:
“You work hard, stretch every penny,” the ad said, showing a picture of a man working at a desk and a woman comparing tins at a supermarket.
“But chances are you pay a higher tax rate than him,” the sonorous voice of narrator said, as a picture of a smiling Romney, a former venture capitalist, flashed on screen.
“Mitt Romney made twenty million dollars in 2010 but paid only 14 percent in taxes — probably less than you,” the ad says — branding Romney’s approach as “He pays less. You pay more.”
Such an ad could only be cut because of the blatant collusion between the Obama campaign and the mainstream media and liberal think tanks that masquerade as neutral — like the Brookings Institution.
The ad is running in key battleground states like Florida, and is based on a Brookings study — written by a former Obama staffer — that said Romney’s tax plan would enrich the wealthy by taking money from the middle class. That study was conveniently released on Tuesday, a mere two days before the ad campaign launched.
Of course, this ad now gives the media even more license — as if Sen. Harry Reid’s (D-NV) spurious accusations about Romney and instructions for them to continue to write on the matter were not enough — to ask Romney to prove that the ad is false by releasing his financial records, which Romney has no obligation to do.
Obama’s ad does not mention that the Supreme Court deemed Obamacare to be a tax, making it one of the largest middle class tax increases in history.
