Romney Campaign: Obama Campaign Lawsuit Targeting Military Voters 'Despicable' and 'Offensive'

Breitbart News broke the story that the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee were suing Ohio’s Attorney General and Secretary of State to prevent military voters from being granted three extra days of early voting. The Obama campaign argued it was unconstitutional and arbitrary for Ohio to grant special privileges to military voters. This was not the first time Democrats targeted military voters.

On Sunday, Mitt Romney’s campaign called Obama campaign’s actions “despicable” and “offensive.”

“We disagree with the basic premise that it is ‘arbitrary’ and unconstitutional to give three extra days of in-person early voting to military voters and their families, and believe it is a dangerous and offensive argument for President Obama and the DNC to make,” Romney’s General Council Katie Biber said in a statement. “It is not only constitutional, but commendable that the Ohio legislature granted military voters and their families this accommodation.

Biber noted that “respected military groups intervened in the Obama campaign’s lawsuit” and argued “it is absolutely constitutional to give military voters special flexibility in voting, and that it is offensive for the Commander-in-Chief’s political campaign to argue otherwise.”

These military groups pointed out that because those in the military — including those stationed in the United States — are subject to restrictions, uncertainties, and risks that make it more difficult for them to vote, it is appropriate to grant those in the military special flexibility when it comes to voting.

“The Obama campaign may not like the early voting policy that the Ohio legislature set,” Biber said. “This does not mean the policy is unconstitutional, and it certainly does not mean that a federal court should be permitted to remake it.”
