Democratic Tampa Mayor: I Might Cancel RNC Over Hurricane Fears

The Democratic mayor of Tampa, Bob Buckhorn, is now warning that he may call off the Republican National Convention next week if Tropical Storm Isaac heads his way.  Speaking to CNN, Buckhorn said, “Absolutely we’re prepared to call it off. I mean, human safety and human life trumps politics. I think the RNC recognizes that. I don’t think it’s going to be a factor in this particular convention. But we are prepared in the event that it is.”

Isaac was 140 miles east of the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe late Wednesday morning, and expected to become a hurricane by Thursday, with projections that it could hit Tampa next week.

Buckhorn is an Obama fan. He said of a Barack Obama speech in June, “The president laid out a blueprint today that will create value-added jobs, grow our economy and tackle the deficit. He made it clear to us in Tampa that he has the right vision to guide this nation’s economic future.” If there is legitimate danger to the population of Tampa, he certainly has the responsibility to cancel the convention. But if he’s too quick on the trigger, we’ll all know why.
