Illegal immigrants in Los Angeles, California are a step closer to obtaining official government identification cards. On Wednesday, members of the Los Angeles City Council Committee voted unanimously to ask the Council to allow third party vendors to run what will be called the “City Services Card,” which will allow illegal immigrants to open bank accounts and apply for official, taxpayer-funded government services.
Ed Reyes, a Council member, said the cards would allow “people who have been living in the shadows to be out in the light of day.”
This proposal is the brainchild of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and he will sign the law when the Council inevitably approves the City Services Card system.
As Judicial Watch notes, California has the largest population of illegal immigrants — the U.S. Census Bureau notes “nearly half of L.A. residents are of Hispanic or Latino origin,” and many are in the U.S. illegally.
According to figures Judicial Watch complied, taxpayers end up paying for services for illegal immigrants. For instance, Los Angeles County spends “about $400 million annually on illegal aliens,” $440 million on welfare and food stamps, and $244 to incarcerate criminals who are illegal immigrants.
Villaraigosa has long been affiliated with Mecha, a group that believes in the “reconquista” theory that “claims seven states in the southwestern U.S. were stolen from Mexico and must be reconquered and reclaimed for Mexico.”
