Natalie Khawam (pictured above, far left) the twin sister of Jill Khawam Kelley (pictured far right), the FBI complainant whose report of threatening emails sparked the investigation that brought down CIA Director David Petraeus (pictured second from left), is beset by financial and legal problems.
A 2006 graduate of Georgetown Law School, she was involved in a bitter divorce and custody hearing in Montgomery County, Maryland throughout 2009 and 2010.
In 2009 she joined the Tampa law firm headed up by famed attorney Barry Cohen. She left that firm in 2011 or 2012, and in July of this year, one month after the FBI initiated the investigation of General Petraeus based on the threatening emails sent to her twin sister, she filed a sexual harassment and breach of contract lawsuit against Mr. Cohen and his firm.
Cohen hit back hard, entering into evidence a 19 page document from her custody hearing, and documents from her April 2012 bankruptcy filing, in which she listed liabilities of $3.2 million, which included $53,000 owed to the IRS.
Baltimore TV station WBAL reported on Monday that Khawam is now being sued for $100,000 in unpaid legal fees by David K. Felsen, the Maryland lawyer who represented her in her divorce proceedings. Breitbart News phoned Felsen’s offices for comment, but has not received a response.
Natalie Khawam resided in the $1.3 million Tampa residence owned and occupied by her sister and her sister’s husband, Dr. Scott Kelley, (pictured second from right), between 2009 and 2012. It’s unclear if she still resides there.
In May, Jill Khawam Kelley reported that she had received threatening emails on an email account she shared with her husband to an FBI agent in the Tampa office she knew from an unspecified previous interaction with the agency. Based on those emails, the FBI launched an investigation in June that led to the discovery that Paula Broadwell had sent the threatening emails, and that she had been involved in an extramarital affair with CIA Director Petraeus.
Members of the Petraeus family have stated that there was no improper relationship between General Petraeus and Jill Khawam Kelley. The Economic Policy Journal reported on Sunday that she has hired a Washington based “crisis management” public relations firm and an attorney, Abbe Lowell, whose previous clients included Jim Wright, Dan Rostenkowsi, John Edwards, and Jack Abramoff.
Jill Khawam Kelley and her sister Natalie Khawam are 37 years old. Both were raised in a Lebanese Christian family that emigrated to Philadelphia from Lebanon in the 1970s.
