Conservative Reps: Boehner Planning Tax Hikes

Two conservative members of Congress who were booted from powerful House Committees by the Republican leadership said House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and the House Republican leadership are set on passing major tax increases to avert the so-called fiscal cliff.

At the Heritage Foundation’s Bloggers Briefing on Tuesday, Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) and Justin Amash (R-MI) blistered Boehner and the House Republican leadership for their deceitful actions behind closed doors.

Ultimately, Huelskamp said Boehner — and the House Republican leadership — will “attempt to pass a tax increase through the House” and conservatives were about to get “run over.”

On Monday, Breitbart News investigative reporter Matthew Boyle broke the story about how the House Republican leadership, which includes Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) and Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), purged conservatives from powerful committees. House Leaders used a “secret criteria list” that most likely included votes on the House floor against some of the more moderate and establishment positions favored by the House leadership.

Huelskamp said if members did not “get a high enough score,” they were “punished” and purged.

Amash, who said he has voted with the leadership 95% of the time, said the House leadership still has not informed him of their decision and that he was forced to “read it in the newspapers.” He said this was “outrageous” and “a slap in the face to all young people who are thinking of becoming Republicans.”

The Republican House leadership removed Huelskamp an Amash from the House Budget Committee and purged Reps. David Schweikert (R-AZ) and Walter Jones (R-NC) from the House Financial Services Committee.
