The NRA Puts Its Money Where Its Mouth Is

When the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre broke that organization’s week-long silence to speak about serious steps that can be taken to prevent another Sandy Hook Elementary shooting from happening, he not only put forth a plan but said the NRA is willing to pay for the implementation of the plan for schools that want it.

In other words, while Democrats and Piers Morgan continue to politicize the shooting in hopes of securing a bit more gun control, the NRA is concerned about safety — and is willing to pick up the tab to make it happen.

Said LaPierre:

Ladies and gentlemen, there is no national, one-size-fits all solution to protecting our children. But we do know [President Obama] zeroed out school emergency planing grants in last year’s budget, and scrapped “Secure Our Schools” policing grants in next year’s budget.

Now, the National Rifle Association knows that there are millions of qualified active and retired police; active, reserve, and retired military; security professionals; certified firefighters and rescue personnel; and an extraordinary corps of patriotic, trained, qualified citizens to join with local school officials and police in devising a protection plan for every school. We can immediately make America’s schools safer — relying  on the brave men and women of America’s police force.

The budgets of our local police departments are strained and resources are limited, but their dedication and courage are second to none and they can be deployed right now.

LaPierre called on Congress to act immediately and “appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school” so children return to safety when school reconvenes in January.

But LaPierre also made it clear the NRA isn’t waiting for Congress to act:

The NRA is going to bring all its knowledge, dedication, and resources to develop a model National School Shield Emergency Response Program for every school that wants it. From armed security to building design and [from] access control to…student and teacher training, this multi-faceted program will be developed by the very best experts in their fields.

The bottom line: While Democrats are sacrificing safety in the name of gun control, the NRA is pushing safety through armed guard deployment and helping to pay for it. In this, they are most certainly (and most honorably) putting their money where their mouth is.
