Sen. Michael Crapo (R-Idaho) was arrested Sunday in Northern Virginia and charged with drunk driving after he failed sobriety tests after police pulled him over when his car ran a red light at 12:45 a.m. Police transported Crapo to an Alexandria, Virginia jail and he was released at 5 a.m. after posting a $1,000 bond.
According to Virginia police, “Crapo, registered a blood alcohol content of .110. The legal limit in Virginia, which has strict drunken driving laws, is .08.” Crapo was alone in his vehicle.
Crapo on Sunday said he was “deeply sorry” for his actions, accepted “total responsibility” for his actions, and would “undertake measures” to ensure he does not become a repeat offender.
“I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance,” Crapo said in a statement Sunday night. “I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated.”
Crapo is a Mormon, and the “Mormon Church prohibits the use of alcohol, as well as caffeine and other mind-altering substances.” Idaho has a “significant Mormon population,” and Crapo has gone on the record in past interviews and said he abstains from drinking alcohol.
“There was no refusal (to take blood alcohol tests), no accident, no injuries,” Virginia police spokesperson Jody Donaldson told ABC News. “Just a traffic stop that resulted in a DUI.”
