South Carolina Teacher Facing Discipline for Stomping on American Flag

A teacher at a South Carolina high school who stomped on an American flag in front of three different honors English classes has been put on paid leave and may face further disciplinary action.

Superintendent Stephen Hefner has recommended that Scott Compton, the teacher, be fired, and the board will “take up the matter on Monday.”

Michael Copeland said he overhead his teenage daughter talking about what her teacher, Compton, did with an American flag.

Copeland’s daughter told her father the English teacher proceeded to “take down the American flag” and said, “This is a symbol, but it’s only a piece of cloth. It doesn’t mean anything.” The teacher then stomped on the flag “repeatedly.”

A spokesperson for the school district, Mark Bounds, said: “Our superintendent served in the military, I served in the military for 20 years, our flag is a symbol of our freedom, and so many people have fought and died for that liberty, and so we take this action very seriously.”

Bounds said the district cautions teachers that “their personal opinion is their personal opinion and shouldn’t be brought into the classroom, and so we caution them all the time.”
