According to preliminary reports, a shooter killed two people and wounded two more at the New Castle County Courthouse in Wilmington, Delaware on Monday morning.
Although the shooter had to force his way through a checkpoint to get into the building, courthouses are official “Gun-Free Zones” in Delaware.
For this reason, once the shooter got into building, courthouse employees had no way to defend themselves; early reports indicate “hysterical staff” holed up in offices–hiding was their only source of self-defense.
Early reports indicate the shooter killed his wife, who was in the building, and another woman, but no motivation has been discussed.
It is unclear at this point whether the shooter then took his own life or whether Capital Police took it for him.
Wilmington Police Chief Christine Dunning is currently in Washington, D.C. attending a “round table [discussion] on gun violence” with VP Joe Biden. One of the common calls coming out of such round tables is a push for more gun free zones.
