Democrats Give 'Prebuttal' to Rubio's SOTU Response

On Monday, prominent Democrats delivered a “prebuttal” to Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday.

On a conference call from the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C., DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse said other senior Democrats decided to give a “prebuttal” on Monday before Obama and Rubio had even delivered their respective speeches. Democrats claimed they were doing so because Rubio would give his rebuttal at a “late hour.” Rubio has no choice about when to deliver his rebuttal because he has to wait until Obama finishes his State of the Union Speech.

“Given the late hour [scheduled for Rubio’s on-camera response] we thought this would be a good opportunity for us to make some comments about what we anticipate based on the record that we have that Sen. Rubio is likely to address and how we would respond to that,” Woodhouse said on the call.

DNC Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) and Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) were also on the call.

According to Yahoo! News, “Wasserman Schultz said Rubio wanted to ‘gut Medicaid’ and would ‘devastate seniors’ by supporting ‘an extreme view of government that would dismantle America’s social safety net in order to pay for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires.'”

Wasserman Schultz also said Rubio would put “nursing homes” and “disabled children” at risk–without any evidence as to what Rubio would even say in his rebuttal to Obama’s address–and Republicans should learn how to smile more.
