On Feb. 26, Vice President Joe Biden met with retired military officials, among them retired Brig. Gen. Stephen Xenakis, to recruit help in pushing an “assault weapons” ban, a “high capacity” magazine ban, and universal background checks.
Xenakis, a former Army physician, is well groomed for the role Biden asked him to play. He has already done a spot for NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns, in which “he asked the public to ‘demand a plan’ from Congress.”
According to Xenakis:
The vice president understands that when it comes to communicating with credibility on guns, the two groups with the most credibility are law enforcement and military officials. We have experience with both having weapons and using them responsibly, so we can get that message out.
Xenakis also believes Biden has “a great overview” of gun issues. He said Biden has “great instincts on this…and is working with leaders in Congress to get it done.”
