Connecticut Legislators Pass Gun, Ammunition Control at 2:26 a.m.

One hundred and thirty-nine pages of gun and ammunition control measures have now passed the Connecticut General Assembly–the senate passed the measures at 6:30 p.m. on April 3 and the house passed them at 2:26 a.m. on April 4.

These measures broaden the states “assault weapons” ban by adding 100 new firearms to the ban. They also contain “eligibility rules” for buying ammunition, ban private sales by requiring a background check for every sale or gun transfer, and ban magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

The Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence Praised the measures, saying: “[Now] Connecticut will join states including California, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts in having the country’s strongest gun laws.” The Brady Campaign has over looked the fact they had already ranked Conn. as having the 5th strictest gun laws in the country before these new measures were even passed. 

Although the politicians supporting these new gun and ammunition control measures said they did so because of the heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary, it should be noted that none of the new legislation will prevent another Sandy Hook-type shooting from taking place. Instead, these are simply new hurdles law-abiding citizens will have to clear to get the firearms they need to protect themselves and their families.
