The rhetoric of the gun debate comes into clear focus when we step outside of conference calls and 30 second gun control commercials and look at the reality of what is really happening in America right now.
For example, in November 2012, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Obama’s reelection proved the NRA was dying and the American people wanted more gun control. In December he went after the NRA again, reminding everyone that the gun rights group was “vastly overrated.”
And in mid-January, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) picked up where Bloomberg left off and made it known that the NRA is “very extreme” and doesn’t “represent average gun [owners].”
All the while, beginning on Dec. 15, the NRA was adding approximately 8,000 new members a day, and by mid-January had added 250,000 new members in four weeks’ time.
On April 17, gun control was defeated in the Senate and the NRA’s “money and power” were credited with the defeat.
During the NRA’s Annual Meeting on May 3-5, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre announced the gun rights group had hit an unprecedented 5 million in membership.
Maybe the NRA isn’t going the way of the dinosaur anytime soon?
