Former SC Dem Chair Triples Down on Racist, Sexist Anti-Haley Remarks

Days after former South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Dick Harpootlian said Vincent Sheheen, the Democrat who will most likely challenge South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley next year, should send Haley “back to wherever the hell she came from,” Harpootlian continued to double and triple down on his comments.

Harpootlian, who long ago planned to step down from his post on the day he made those comments, immediately sent an email to Politico saying he meant Sheheen should send Haley back to “Lexington County.” He claimed he did not think those comments could be interpreted to refer to the home country of Haley’s parents–India.

“No, she was born in Bamberg [South Carolina] and lived in Lexington,” Harpootlian said. “Anybody implying anything different is attempting to feign insult.”

Days later, Harpootlian then said he meant Haley, who was born and went to school in South Carolina, should go back to being an “accountant” at a “dress store.” Haley had been the accountant in her parent’s clothing store.

Harpootlian, who once implied Haley was Eva Braun (Adolf Hitler’s mistress), received a pass from Democrats and the mainstream media, who have been quick to label any Republican making similar comments as racist or sexist.
