Carney: No Proof Al Qaeda Tied To Benghazi Prior To Sept. 16

Talking to reporters on May 10, White House spokesman Jay Carney said there was no substantive evidence Al Qaeda was tied to the Benghazi attacks before U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice appeared on Sunday talk shows on Sept. 16.

Yet Acting Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs Beth Jones sent an email on Sept 12–the day after the attacks–in which she indicated that “the group that conducted the attacks, Ansar al Sharia, is affiliated with Islamic terrorists.”

Also, 48 hours after the attacks had taken place, “the U.S. government had multiple streams of intelligence indicating that Ansar al Sharia was involved.”

And “the CIA station chief in Libya cabled back to Washington late on September 12 and reported that eye witnesses said militants with ties to Al Qaeda were involved in the attack.”
