Billionaire liberal activist Tom Steyer is mobilizing his NextGen Action political action committee (PAC) to kill the Keystone Pipeline.
Steyer plans to hone in on Obama voters to defeat the pipeline, a risky political strategy that could deepen rifts between Obama and his already fractured liberal base if the president ignores NextGen’s demands and approves the pipeline.
The billionaire environmental activist sent Obama a letter listing his reasons for launching NextGen’s June 20th action against the pipeline.
“Given that none of the chief arguments being put forth by supporters of the pipeline remain standing, NextGenAction is going to be working with our friends and allies who are opposed to the development of Keystone XL to intensify our efforts in communicating what is the right policy choice to your Administration,” Steyer wrote in his letter.
An April poll by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars found broad support among Americans and Canadians for the Keystone Pipeline. According to the poll, 74% of Americans and 68% of Canadians support the job-creating project.
