Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) wants to pass the Gang of Eight’s comprehensive immigration reform bill before July 4, and he has given the Senate three weeks to debate the bill.
“We are going to finish the bill before the July 4 recess,” Reid said Thursday. “We need to finish this bill and we’re going to do it as quick as we can.”
He claimed there were “very few pieces of legislation that we’ve had come to the floor in recent years” that have been as “thoroughly discussed” and “debated” as comprehensive immigration reform.
He also said nobody can “complain about not having had time to read the bill,” even though the bill is over 1,000 pages. “They’ve read it, they’ve studied it and there’s no reason we can’t finish this debate quickly.”
As The Hill notes, the Senate’s Gang of Eight would like to pass the bill with 70 votes, but Reid said he was focused on just getting the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster.
