Poll: 48% of Americans Want to Be Entrepreneurs

Despite the difficulties of running a small business in today’s economic environment, 48% of Americans have dreams of having their own small business. Seventy-one percent of those who already have a small business say they would do it again if given the chance, according to research polling conducted by UPS of 1,700 consumers and small business owners. The same research indicates that the small business owners were the kind of people who plan ahead; 51% said they had considered it for 2 years before starting, and 31% said they had given the matter thought for 5 years.

Constant Contact, a group that does online surveys for small businesses, conducted a survey of 900 people that illustrated the difficulties facing small businesses. Their survey showed 59% of business owners said running a business is harder today, and 35% of respondents said competition and their inability to reach customers through their marketing has hurt their business.
