(AP) – Photos from remote cameras show a rare male jaguar roaming the Santa Rita Mountains in Southern Arizona.
The Arizona Daily Star reports (https://bit.ly/12rLi2b ) the cameras have photographed the big cat in five locations on seven occasions since October. The pictures were provided to the Star this week by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.
Federally financed remote cameras photographed the jaguar west of the proposed Rosemont Mine site in the mountains southeast of Tucson.
It’s the only jaguar known to live in the United States since the 15-year-old known as Macho B died in Arizona in 2009.
The photographs come as federal wildlife officials consider designating more than 1,300 square miles in New Mexico and Arizona as critical habitat for the jaguar.
